Automation is a process, not a shortcut.

Rules-based trading can remove some emotional decisions — but it introduces new risks in design, testing and operation. Understand both sides.

01

Define the rule

A rule must be specific enough to be tested: entry, exit, sizing and invalidation. Ambiguity cannot be automated reliably.

02

Test the assumption

Backtests show how a rule behaved on past data. They do not prove future performance and are sensitive to overfitting.

03

Operate with safeguards

Latency, connectivity, data errors and position limits are operational risks that must be managed in production.

What automation can help with

  • Removing some impulsive decisions from execution
  • Applying the same sizing rules consistently
  • Testing an idea against historical data
  • Recording decisions for later review

What it does not remove

  • Market risk, drawdowns or the possibility of loss
  • Overfitting or the fragility of historical results
  • Slippage, gaps and execution failures
  • The need for judgement, monitoring and maintenance
